Slate boards we associate, perhaps, only with the school. However, modern designers say: more and more people decide to include a slate surface in the interior of an apartment, house or cafe. Modern slate planes are a little similar to standard school blackboards - now they can be entire walls or sections of walls, and even small “windows” above a desk. Boring brown colors are also in the past - the slate surface can be black and graphite, green and even violet. Moreover, it can also have magnetic properties!
Slate Paint
Manufacturers produce slate paints in two basic forms: in the form of ordinary cans / buckets with liquid paint for work with a brush or roller, and in the form of aerosol cans. The main and basic properties of slate paints are that they are completely resistant to moisture and abrasion after drying, and on the dried layer of such paint they keep excellent notes with chalk. Slate paints are made on a water basis, they are non-toxic and easy to use, dry quickly and serve as a recording surface for a long time. As a rule, such paints are used only indoors, as they negatively tolerate negative temperatures. Slate (graphite) paint in a jar Marabu tafel creates a smooth surface with various shades. You can paint on 3-4 layers and dried paint with chalk, special markers, erase the recordings with a damp cloth or sponge. The paint is ready for use - its volume is enough for about 0.5 sq.m. surface, which is equivalent to one small slate.
Paint in aerosols Krylon Chalk Board and Rust-Oleum also have several dark shades, and are conveniently applied on any flat surfaces, both vertical (walls, columns and boards), and horizontal (children's tables, tennis tables). On average, a Chalk Board paint spray can be 1.5 square meters. surface. Manufacturers recommend applying paint in at least two layers.
Making a slate board with your own hands
Since the slate paints are sold ready to use, all that is needed is the paint itself, the drawing tool and the prepared plane. Slate paint fits well on plaster, wood, metal, drywall, concrete and plaster, as well as glass and ceramics. Before painting the surface must be prepared: clean of dirt and grease, old layers of paint, dry well. The paint must be thoroughly mixed (spray - shake well for about a minute). Gently apply the paint to the surface, drying each layer. The optimal number of required layers is from 2 to 4, depending on the manufacturer. Remember that slate paint is subject to correction only in its raw form - then it becomes completely resistant to water.
You can make not just a chalkboard for recordings, but also a magnetic board at the same time. To do this, before applying the slate paint, ground the desired plane with a special magnetic primer (another name is iron primer). Of course, such a surface will not attract heavy metal objects, but for souvenir magnets and magnets for an office board it will be quite enough. Magnetic primer is applied to the surface as a base, and slate paint as a topcoat. After drying, the surface is ready for use. You can separate the slate surface from the rest of the wall with decorative wooden or plastic slats, place a capacity for chalk, markers and eraser sponges under or near the board. Under the board, you can glue a slightly protruding baseboard or gutter - so that chalk dust will settle on it and not on the floor or desktop. In the children's room next to the slate, young artists will need a hook or towel rail to wipe their hands off the chalk. On the surface, you can send individual lamps to become the accent of the interior in the dark.
The slate is ready. From time to time it can be cleaned with a soft cloth and soapy water. In case of mechanical damage, the surface can be repaired by applying one or two additional layers of slate paint. Manufacturers claim that the slate surface quietly maintains five thousand drawing / erasing cycles without losing properties. Acquire chalk, magnets, and start recording and drawing whatever you want!
